Aaja Nachle 1: A Dance Film Review

Aaja Nachle 1 (Come, Let's Dance) is a 2007 Indian Hindi-language dance film produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Anil Mehta. The film stars Madhuri Dixit in her first film in five years after Devdas (2002), alongside Konkona Sen Sharma, Jugal Hansraj, and Kunal Kapoor in pivotal roles.

The film tells the story of Dia (Dixit), a choreographer who returns to her hometown Shamli after receiving news of her dying dance teacher, Makrand (Darshan Jariwala). She finds out that he has left her the responsibility of saving the deserted dance theatre, Ajanta, which is to be demolished to make way for a shopping centre. To save Ajanta, Dia has to put on a successful performance of the famous Laila-Majnu play using only people from Shamli, while facing opposition from the local politician Chaudhary Om Singh (Akhilendra Mishra) and his nephew Imran (Kapoor), who plays Majnu.

The film is a tribute to the art of dance and theatre, as well as a celebration of Madhuri Dixit's comeback to the silver screen. The film features several dance numbers choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant and Shiamak Davar, including the title song "Aaja Nachle", which showcases Dixit's grace and charisma. The film also explores themes such as cultural identity, community spirit, and female empowerment.

The film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and was declared a flop by Box Office India. However, the film has gained a cult following among fans of Dixit and dance lovers. The film was nominated for two Filmfare Awards Best Actress (Dixit) and Best Female Playback Singer (Sunidhi Chauhan for "Aaja Nachle").
